The album 69 Love Songs by Magnetic Fields is a unique and ambitious project that showcases the diverse range of the band's musical talent. Comprised of three discs, each with 23 songs, this album is a veritable treasure trove of clever lyrics, catchy melodies, and genre-bending experimentation.
From the upbeat pop of "Absolutely Cuckoo" to the haunting balladry of "The Book of Love," the songs on this album are as varied as they are memorable. Magnetic Fields mastermind Stephin Merritt's wry wit and distinctive baritone voice are on full display here, as he weaves together tales of love, lust, heartbreak, and everything in between.
While some songs may be more accessible than others, the sheer volume and diversity of the material on 69 Love Songs is impressive. It's clear that Magnetic Fields have poured their hearts and souls into this album, and the result is a collection of songs that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

About The Magnetic Fields
The Magnetic Fields (named after the novel Les Champs Magnétiques) is an American indie pop group founded and led by Stephin Merritt. He is the group's primary songwriter, producer and vocalist, as well as frequent multi-instrumentalist. The Magnetic Fields is essentially a vehicle for Merritt's songwriting, along with various side-projects, such as The 6ths, Future Bible Heroes and The Gothic Archies. While the particular musical style of the band is usually as malleable as Merritt's songwriting, its songs are commonly attributed to pop genres and subgenres: synthpop, indie pop, and noise pop. The band is often also cited as being recognizable by Merritt's lyrics, often about love and often with irregular or neutral gender roles, that are by turns ironic, tongue-in-cheek, bitter, and humorous.
69 Love Songs is a must-have for fans of indie pop and alternative music. With its clever lyrics, catchy melodies, and wide-ranging musical styles, this album is a true masterpiece that stands the test of time.
genuinely brilliant album that does not tire despite the majesty of the work, has many small moans in the manner of the minutemen, even if in another context. clebre also the book of love then redone by peter gabriel
Peter Gabriel ruined this song by making it an overwrought, overly emotional, sappy and overproduced power ballad. What a waste of Peter Gabriel’s talent.
Discovered this song when my Dad died 19 years ago it helped me in a way to understand or try to understand what was happening to me. For some reason had to seek it out again 2night...
I don't understand where why or how I understand this but it finds me in the darkness of not knowing where I should be going or Where I'm going to end up going too
A beautiful song by Stephin Merritt. The song is clever and playful in its construction. It's essentially a grumpy man professing his love, with the long "I" and "You" transitioning from his opinionated thinking side to the side of how he feels. Peter Gabriel's version missed the point of the song by making the whole song too melodramatic and by introducing too much orchestration into the music.
I had a theory that the verse "no one can lift the damn thing" implies that no ONE person can lift the book, so two people have to lift it, and that's how they fall in love.
